HOW DO STEAM TURBINES WORK?

Image
Nuclear and coal based thermal power plants together produce almost half of the world's electric power and steam turbines are the heart of these power plants. Steam turbines convert thermal energy into mechanical energy which inturn rotates the generator shafts to produce electricity. Charles Parsons first invented the modern steam turbine back in 1884. WORKING PRINCIPLE OF STEAM TURBINE: A steam turbine consists of multiple blades in airfoil shape. When a high pressure steam passes over it, a pressure difference is created due to the airfoil shape of the blade. The pressure difference creates a lifting force which rotates the turbine. Thus conversion of energy takes place that is from heat energy to mechanical energy. This is the basic working principle of a steam turbine and the  turbine manufacturers  rely on this for the best design. HOW DOES A STEAM TURBINE WORK? As the name implies that it is powered by steam, a high energy steam is injected into the turbine which...

Steam turbine, one of the greatest inventions in the field of mechanical engineering is an energy conversion device that converts thermal energy from the steam into mechanical energy. The modern steam turbine was invented in the late 19th century by Charles Parsons. In those days the demand for the efficient energy conversion device was high due to the industrial revolution. The steam turbines were introduced in the power generation sector as they were able to create a rotatory motion which in turn continuously rotated the shaft of the generators. It replaced the conventional piston based steam engine because of its greater thermal conversion efficiency and high power to weight ratio. Initially the steam turbines were used in power plants and later it gained importance in various power conversion devices too. The steam turbine made the power production cheap and shaped the efficient use of thermal power through its multiple stages of expansion. Steam turbines have become an integral p...

Steam Turbines - CTMI

Steam turbines extracts thermal energy from pressurized steam and uses it to do mechanical work on a rotating output shaft. Its modern manifestation was invented by Charles Parsons in 1884. Chola Turbo is one of the leading steam turbines manufacturer in India. Our manufacturing unit is located in an industrial zone near Bangalore. We are proudly manufacturing various classes of steam turbine form the last 2 decades. CTMI is backed by a group of dedicated technocrats who are constantly engaged in monitoring the improvements of quality and testing standards with design and development work. Our Steam Turbines Packages are the result of long-lasting experience and dynamic engineering. With base design and base scope the packages can be used for power generation and as mechanical drives and enable an output range from 5kW to 30 MW.

Steam Turbine And Its Components

A   steam turbine   is a device that converts   thermal energy   into rotating mechanical energy. Turbines are employed for moving the rotor shafts of generators, they are the heart of all power plants, and are responsible for creating a rotational movement that induces an electromotive force(emf) in the generator coil to produce electricity. The operation of the steam turbine completely depends upon the dynamic action of the high-pressure steam ejected through the nozzle. There are four major types of turbines; water turbine, steam turbine, gas turbine, and wind turbine. Among these different designs have been developed by various scientists and engineers. Steam turbines are used in power plants, industries, and cogeneration plants. India has emerged as one of the leading turbine manufacturing countries due to the tremendous development in the technology of design and manufacturing. Hundreds of Indian companies are leading in the international market by desig...
